Santorini Island is in the Cyclades island group located in the Aegean Sea between Ios and Anafi. The island is the site of what is thought to be one of the largest volcanic eruptions known to man which occurred approximately 3500 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. A popular theory is that this event was the source of the Atlantis legend. Today, Santorini is what remains from the eruption; once a single island, it is now a small a small archipelago of volcanic islands. The largest island, officially called Thera, is a volcanic caldera which has a submerged volcano crater in its middle forming a giant lagoon surrounded by cliffs. Because of its spectacular physical beauty and active night life, Santorini is one of Europe’s top tourist destinations. Part of the island’s charm comes from its villages; perched on the cliffs surrounding the caldera, they are filled with typical Cycladic whitewashed houses and churches with a back-drop of breathtaking natural beauty.
Villa Skollis is located just outside of the town of Monolithos and 300 feet from the Monolithos beach. The nearby town of Kamari and its beach are 2 miles further south. Both beaches are popular destinations and boast black sand and deep blue water.
